SHED the DEAD!

July 30, 2014

The summer months bring us blissful days at the beach, ocean swims and outdoor fun. They also bring sunburns, sweat, skin irritations and the need to take extra diligent care of our skin. This means applying sunscreen to protect our epidermis from harmful rays, staying hydrated to maintain moisture and eating a diet high in vitamins and antioxidants. But it doesn't stop there.....although it's important to be aware of what we put ON our body's surface, it's equally important to be mindful of what we take OFF our bodies. Welcome to the wonderful world of exfoliating!

As we get older, our skin's natural ability to shed dead skin and regenerate new cells diminishes considerably. This leaves us with an accumulation of excess dead skin (yuck!) which leads to oil build-ups and clogged pores. The end result is less than desirable: dull, lifeless, patchy and acne-prone skin.

By exfoliating as little as once a week, not only do we rid our bodies of excessive dead cells, but you'll notice a vast improvement in other areas of your skin care regime. Your skin will feel softer and look more radiant and even-toned. Your makeup will go on smoother, your skin care products will penetrate deeper and more efficiently and if you exfoliate before shaving or applying a self-tanner, you'll be showing off a smoother shave and more even tan lines in no time!

There are two types of exfoliation: manual and chemical. Manual usually consists of an abrasive scrub, polish or skin brush to slough off cells. If using a scrub, try to stick with a product whose granules are smooth and not jagged to avoid causing tears in the skin. A great one to try is Dead Sea Salt Scrub or the Black Gold Mud Mask with Rhassoul Clay, Dead Sea Mud, Comfrey and REAL dark chocolate by Galiano Island Soapworks! Chemical exfoliators are products that use acids and enzymes (including fruit enzymes)to dissolve old skin cells without the need to scrub. Which type of exfoliation should you use? It's up to your own personal preference.....but be gentle and don't overdo it. Once or twice a week is all you'll need for glowing healthy skin this season. Now start shedding!
